About Us

Musical Beginnings has been happily providing music instruction to Westchester and nearby communities since 1998, teaching thousands of students over the years. Founded by director Linda Silva in her living room, it has since expanded to the two locations it occupies today as well as the community sites it serves through its partner nonprofit Music Tree.

The studio encourages long-term music study by taking the time to find the best instructor and instrument for each student, by not rushing children into lessons before they’re ready, and by being attuned to how a student’s needs might change over the years. It approaches music as a long-term pursuit and joy rather than something to be hurried into or through. 

Musical Beginnings started as a young child program and that remains its heart, welcoming tiny music makers and their families at the beginning of their musical journeys. On the other end of the spectrum are the school’s wonderful core of adult students who keep things lively and add breadth to its programs.

Musical Beginnings places great emphasis on hiring and keeping exceptional teachers. Most have been with the school for years. Because of these teachers, the school’s philosophy of educating students carefully and well, and the dedication of their families, many young musicians begin as toddlers and stay at the school throughout their childhood. They leave for college as advanced players and poised performers. Adult students often come in as beginners and before they know it have put in the time and effort to be playing as though they’ve always known how!

Musical Beginnings is proud to continue its quarter-century tradition of providing students of all ages with the skills and understanding they need to enjoy music for a lifetime.

Our Teachers

All Musical Beginnings teachers are university-trained and have professional performing experience. They are skilled in working with a wide range of ages and abilities. They all have their own unique teaching method and upon enrollment we place students with the one who best matches their learning style and musical interests. Our teachers are carefully screened before they are hired and are chosen from among dozens of applicants; all have undergone fingerprinting and background checks. Our goal is to ensure that every Musical Beginnings student receives a high-quality music education from an instructor who is both an excellent musician and a skilled teacher.
