Music Classes for Children

Babies, Toddlers & Preschoolers

Music and movement is what children were born to do. Engaging in meaningful musical activity stimulates virtually every neural center, creating "fireworks" in the brain. Research shows music participation to be highly beneficial to a child's cognitive, emotional, and motor growth (and an adult's too!). But more than that, music adds joy to life. It is something we can enjoy with our children as well as a gift to them that lasts their whole lives.

Our Young Child classes keep things lively, maintaining a little one’s interest while  at the same time building their singing voices and teaching them to feel a beat and respond musically to what they hear. Our curriculum uses instruments that shake, jingle, and tap; puppets and balls; dancing and books and listening games.

When children have the building blocks of pitch and rhythm in place we to start to slowly introduce music notation. In the early years we focus on hearing and feeling and performing music rather than on reading notes. We start to introduce music notation in our 4-year-old classes but continue to primarily emphasize overall musicianship. Hearing and understanding music internally—what is sometimes called “audiating”—leads to beautiful and expressive playing later.

Elementary-Age Children

Foundations (ages 5-7) is a year-long preparation for instrumental instruction designed to develop solid musicianship through singing and movement, to introduce note reading and terminology, and throughout the year to explore glockenspiel, recorder, guitar, violin, and keyboard.  For older elementary-aged students we offer singing classes. Group classes are a fun, social introduction to music study and  encourage more in-depth instrumental study later.
